full-strut
Full Strut

In 1784 Ben Franklin wrote his daughter a letter complaining about the eagle on the new country's seal. A bird of bad moral character, he said, that lives by stealing another bird's fish. The turkey was the more respectable choice. A true native, and brave enough to run a soldier out of his barnyard.

Anyone who has hunted one in the spring knows he had a point. A tom in full strut at first light, fan spread, chest puffed out, drumming loud enough to feel in your ribs, is about as sure of himself as anything in the woods. Come November, he's the reason everybody ends up at the same table.

The fan spreads wide behind him, every feather ridged and hammered. Head turned to the side, wattle and snood worked in, breast hammered round, feet planted. Recesses blackened, high points polished. Hammered bail.

Fan spread.
