Our Story
A croft is a small patch of land worked by hand.
The people who held one made what they needed from what they had. No factory. No shortcuts. Just skill, and the will to build something that outlasted them.
We took the name because it's the closest thing we've found to what we actually do.
We are a family, and this is a small shop.
Vancroft & Co is run by the Bain family, out of a workshop in Vermont. We pour our own metal, work it by hand, and finish every piece before it leaves. There are no rooms full of machines here. There is a bench, a kiln, and the people who use them.
That means we make fewer pieces than we could. It also means no two are exactly alike, and the one you get was worked on by someone whose name is on the certificate in the box.
We make things for men who keep things.
Most jewelry is designed to be replaced. Thin, hollow, plated — it bends, it dents, the finish wears through, and in two years it's in a drawer.
We build the opposite. Solid metal with real weight. A bail formed as one piece with the pendant, because that's the part that snaps on lesser work. A surface that holds its edge through a life of being worn rather than looked at.
A piece should get better with the years, not worse. It should carry the marks of where it's been.
Worn for a lifetime. Passed to the next.
That's not a slogan we wrote for a website. It's the whole reason we do this.
Somewhere down the line, a piece we made ends up in someone else's hand — a son, a brother, a friend who needed it more. They won't have met us. They'll never know our names. But the metal will still be there, and it'll still mean what it meant.
That's why every certificate has a blank line on it: Passed to.
We leave it empty on purpose. That part isn't ours to fill in.
