The seal is a clear coating applied by hand at the bench, after the piece is poured, oxidized, and relieved. It goes on thin, sits in the low places without clouding them, and locks the finish exactly where it was the day it left Vermont. The oxidation stays where it was put. The high points stay bright.
It goes on the back face and the edges — the surfaces that meet skin and shirt — so the front of the piece is untouched.

Poured solid in a single piece, the planes left broad and the hammer marks left in. Oxidation settles into the eyes, the inner ears, and the line of the muzzle and pulls the face forward out of the metal.
