The seal is a clear coating applied by hand at the bench, after the piece is poured, oxidized, and relieved. It goes on thin, sits in the low places without clouding them, and locks the finish exactly where it was the day it left Vermont. The oxidation stays where it was put. The high points stay bright.
It goes on the back face and the edges — the surfaces that meet skin and shirt — so the front of the piece is untouched.

It is a real animal. The death's-head hawkmoth wears a skull on its back, squeaks when you handle it, and walks into beehives to drink the honey — the bees let it, because it smells like one of them. For three hundred years people took it for a sign. It landed on candles in sickrooms. It came in the window the night someone died. Every village had a story.
The moth never knew. It was doing what it was made to do: fly at night, wear the mark, take what it wanted from the hive and walk out.
Wings folded, hammered across the whole surface, veins raised. The skull set in a ring of fine lines where the thorax would be. Poured heavy enough that it hangs still.
