The seal is a clear coating applied by hand at the bench, after the piece is poured, oxidized, and relieved. It goes on thin, sits in the low places without clouding them, and locks the finish exactly where it was the day it left Vermont. The oxidation stays where it was put. The high points stay bright.
It goes on the back face and the edges — the surfaces that meet skin and shirt — so the front of the piece is untouched.

People carved their own and set them in the window so he would pass the house by.
The turnip became a pumpkin when the story crossed the water. The point did not change. The face in the window is not there to scare you. It is there to tell whatever is walking the road tonight that this house is already lit.
