The seal is a clear coating applied by hand at the bench, after the piece is poured, oxidized, and relieved. It goes on thin, sits in the low places without clouding them, and locks the finish exactly where it was the day it left Vermont. The oxidation stays where it was put. The high points stay bright.

It goes on the back face and the edges — the surfaces that meet skin and shirt — so the front of the piece is untouched.

Applied to every pendant in your order before it ships. Nothing for you to do.

Almost everyone believes in one, whether they say so out loud or not. The near miss on the highway. The call that came at the right moment. The thing that should have gone badly and did not. Ask a man if he has one and he might shrug, but ask him if he has ever been looked after and he will go quiet and think of something specific.

Psalm 91 is where that belief comes from. It is the passage about being covered — and the same verse calls that covering a shield. Not a blanket. A shield is set between you and what is coming and held there.

It became the soldier's psalm, carried into both world wars folded in men's pockets.
