The seal is a clear coating applied by hand at the bench, after the piece is poured, oxidized, and relieved. It goes on thin, sits in the low places without clouding them, and locks the finish exactly where it was the day it left Vermont. The oxidation stays where it was put. The high points stay bright.
It goes on the back face and the edges — the surfaces that meet skin and shirt — so the front of the piece is untouched.

On a ship, the shrouds are the heavy lines that hold the mast up. A sailor climbs them to work the sails. He trusts his weight to them in a gale. And when his watch is finally over, the sailmaker sews him into his own hammock, drops a round shot at his feet, and puts the last stitch through the nose to be sure. Same word. Same cloth. The thing that held you aloft is the thing that takes you down.
The hood is the shape of that last stitch. Hammered outside, black as a hold inside. Under the cowl, a skull and crossed bones worked in a knot that does not come undone.
Small on the ear. Heavy in what it says.
