The seal is a clear coating applied by hand at the bench, after the piece is poured, oxidized, and relieved. It goes on thin, sits in the low places without clouding them, and locks the finish exactly where it was the day it left Vermont. The oxidation stays where it was put. The high points stay bright.
It goes on the back face and the edges — the surfaces that meet skin and shirt — so the front of the piece is untouched.

The cherry blossom does not wilt. It does not brown on the branch and hang there. It opens all the way, holds for a week, and then lets go at the peak — whole, still perfect, on the wind. In Japan people gather under the trees to watch it happen. That is hanami. Not watching the flowers. Watching them fall.
The samurai took the blossom as his own for that reason. Not because it was pretty. Because it went out at full strength and did not cling.
