The seal is a clear coating applied by hand at the bench, after the piece is poured, oxidized, and relieved. It goes on thin, sits in the low places without clouding them, and locks the finish exactly where it was the day it left Vermont. The oxidation stays where it was put. The high points stay bright.
It goes on the back face and the edges — the surfaces that meet skin and shirt — so the front of the piece is untouched.

A holdfast is the thing that grips and does not let go. On a ship it is hardware. In a hand it is this.
Solid bronze, poured into an organic river-stone shape with no imagery on it at all. A shallow hollow is ground into the face where a thumb sits. That hollow is polished to a mirror while the rest stays dark, and the contrast is the whole object.
There is nothing to explain and nothing to show anyone. You keep it in a pocket and you find it when you need something to do with your hands.
Hand-poured bronze, antique-patinated, finished at the bench. Comes on black paracord in a tight snake weave. The side is stamped VANCROFT & CO.
The dish is already bright. Years of thumbing will take it further, and the field around it will go darker to match.
